Why you should choose Xylitol

December 20, 2018

Many of you may have heard about Xylitol. Xylitol is commonly found in candies and chewing gum as a replacement for sugar. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol sourced from corn or birch trees. It both feels and tastes like sugar, but with less ill effects. Xylitol is non-fermentable, meaning our oral bacteria can’t use it to produce cavity causing acids. It also prohibits bacteria from adhering to cellular tissue. This prevents oral bacteria from flourishing.

Xylitol contains about 40% less calories than regular sugar and has little to no effect on insulin and blood sugar levels. These characteristics make Xylitol a great option for people suffering from diabetes. In addition to candies and chewing gum, Xylitol is also often found many of the products that help with dry mouth. You can reference our previous post for a list of those products here. If you’re someone who chews gum regularly you may think about trying one that contains Xylitol. It is an option the lacks sugar;therefore it also lacks the side effects that many artificial sweeteners have. The Xylitol chewing gum would als be great for your teeth! Spry is a great option with many flavor choices!

There are a few things to keep in mind when using Xylitol. Although our bodies make up to 15 grams of Xylitol a day, everybody is different and too much can have a laxative effect. Xylitol is safe for human consumption, but it is not safe for dogs so remember to keep any Xylitol containing products out of your pets reach!
